On February 24, 2022, the Romanian Post issued a series of postage stamps dedicated to fauna, or rather animals with Dalmatian color.
The series consists of four postage stamps depicting the Appaloosa, English Spotted Rabbit, Holstein Cow and California Kingsnake. All animals selected for stamps are distinguished by their characteristic coloration with clear black spots of various sizes randomly scattered over the white skin. At the same time, the inspirer of the series - the dog-dolmatian is not on the stamps, but they are present in large numbers on the coupons in small sheets and on the first day cover. These series are also distinguished by an unusual rhomboid shape of postage stamps.
The 2 lei stamp depicts an Appaloosa horse. This is a North American horse breed that is very popular in the United States of America. She is known mainly for her unusual color, with numerous spots covering the horse's skin on different parts of the body. The pattern, shape, and size of the spots can vary greatly between horses and may even change over the course of an animal's life.
The Appaloosa is a strong, agile and versatile breed that today is primarily used in equestrian competition, excelling in many British and Western riding disciplines. In the past, Appaloosa horses were used as working or riding animals for hunting, warfare, farm work, or parades.
The creation of the Appaloosa breed is closely associated with the Nez Perce American Indians, renowned as great breeders and trainers of horses, whose history is intertwined with the history of horses in North America and who laid the foundations for the creation of this breed. The name of the breed is also derived from Native Americans by merging some words that refer to "spotted horses in the Palause River area". In 1938, the first Appaloosa equestrian club was founded, officially beginning the formation and development of the breed as we know it today.
The stamps, designed by designer George Ursachi, were issued in mini sheets of 5 stamps and 4 coupons with marginal art. Also, the Romanian Post has prepared a colorful first day cover and maximum cards.
The series of postage stamps was prepared with the assistance of the National Museum of Natural History "Grigore Antipa" in Bucharest.
