On June 21, 2023, Mexico Post issued a postage stamp in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of General Francisco "Pancho" Villa.
José Doroteo Arango Arambula, better known as Francisco "Pancho" Villa (1878 - 1923) was one of the revolutionary generals and peasant rebel leaders during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917.
Pancho Villa is a very colorful historical character who, however, evokes mixed feelings. He was born and grew up as a simple farm laborer, but became a bandit and for almost 10 years was the leader of a gang of robbers. Then Pancho Villa's fate took another sharp turn when he joined the ranks of the Mexican revolutionaries. A few years later, Pancho Villa became a famous commander and influential politician. He did not have the chance to meet a peaceful old age; he was killed at the age of 45 in 1923 as a result of another political conspiracy. Pancho Villa left a bright mark on the history of the country; I still consider him one of the greatest heroes of the Mexican Revolution.
2023 has been declared the Year of Francisco "Pancho" Villa in Mexico. Mexico Post did not stand aside and issued a postage stamp in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of the national hero.
Poor childhood and disenfranchised youth left their mark on the character of Pancho Villa. Having become a robber, he turned into a kind of local Robin Hood, robbing rich estates, he often helped the poor. Thanks to this, Pacno Villa gained popularity among ordinary people, peasants and farm laborers. In 1910, he was no longer the leader of a gang, but the leader of a revolutionary cavalry detachment and guide
people's aspirations. A small detachment of horsemen became the basis for the future victorious army, which later received the name of the Northern Division.
The postage stamp, designed by designer Vivek Martínez, is a collage of two historical photographs. On the left is a large portrait of Pancho Villa, and on the right he is in his usual combat form on horseback. By the way, Pancho Villa, who participated in numerous battles and battles on his faithful mare named Swallow (Tragaleguas), received the apt nickname Centaur of the North.
The $7.50 stamp was issued in a circulation of 300,000 copies. The post office also prepared a First Day Cover and a special postmark. The presentation of the commemorative stamp took place on June 21, 2023 in Mexico City at the Postal Palace with a large crowd of spectators and specially invited guests.
