On September 8, 2021, the Czech Post issued a miniature sheet in the series Nature Conservation: Milovice
The Milovice Nature Reserve, founded in 2015 by Česká krajina, is located near the town of Milovice in the Nymburk region of central Bohemia. This reserve is an innovative project of cooperation between several scientific organizations such as the Czech Academy of Sciences, Charles University in Prague, Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Masaryk University in Brno, etc.
The reserve with an area of 40 hectares was organized on the site of a military training ground that has not been used for a long time. The vast territory left unattended fell into desolation, the plains with forbs began to be covered with wild thickets of bushes. The number and variety of birds and insects living there, including rare ones, has perceptibly decreased. As a method of preserving a rare ecosystem, scientists proposed an interesting solution: to settle three species of large herbivorous mammals in the reserve: bison, aurochs and wild horses, and to organize the so-called nature conservation grazing.
Once upon a time, turs, bison and wild horses lived throughout Europe, but by now the wild representatives of these breeds have completely disappeared. Therefore, bison and tours in Milovice were brought from the national reserves of Poland and Holland.
Only the wild horses were missing. According to recent research, the closest surviving relative of the extinct wild horse of Central and Western Europe (Equus ferus ferus) is the Exmoor pony. Exmoor ponies still belong to an endangered species, there are about 1,500 of them left around the world. A small herd of Exmoor ponies has been discharged from the Exmoor National Park, UK, with the assistance of the Moorland Mousie Trust, with the aim of raising them in the Czech Republic in natural conditions and preserving and spreading the population of this horse species. The herd consisted of a stallion and 14 mares, later they were joined by several more ponies. In the spring of 2016, foals have already appeared in the herd, which have perfectly adapted to their new habitat. Now the herd already consists of more than 50 horses. All ponies from the local herd are registered in the studbook, their pedigree is kept, scientists and ecologists carefully monitor the condition of the animals and study their behavior.
As part of a wildlife conservation project in the Milovice Nature Reserve, hectares of flowering meadows have been naturally restored by grazing large ungulates. There are ideal conditions for the life of endangered species of birds, butterflies, reptiles and other representatives of the fauna, as well as various species of meadow plants.
The artists Jaromír and Libuše Knotkovi tried to reflect the beauty and diversity of the inhabitants of the Milovice nature reserve on the postage stamps. Small leaf stamps depict bison, aurochs and Exmoor ponies, as well as the alcon blue butterfly. Numerous birds, insects and plants - inhabitants of the Milovice nature reserve - are located on coupons and miniature sheet fields.
In addition to the small sheet, the Czech Post has prepared a series of first day cover and maximum cards, as well as 4 special postmarks - their own for each of the postage stamps.
