Driving or horse-drawn carriage competitions is one of the disciplines of equestrian sports. Driving is not as widespread as dressage or show jumping, but in a number of countries such as Hungary, Poland, Germany, France, USA and Canada, drag waving competitions are very popular. In recent years, Hungarian drivers have made significant strides in this sport. Hosting prestigious international competitions in Hungary provides excellent opportunities for both professional development and demonstration of the achieved success to the international equestrian community.
Sleds with a different number of horses participate in the driving competition: single and double sleds, tandems and four in hand. The four in hand sledding competition is undoubtedly the most spectacular. The competition program consists of three types of competitions and lasts three days, largely repeating the program of equestrian triathlon.
On the first day of the competition, dressage takes place, where athletes demonstrate the horses' crumpledness, synchronization of their movements, correct and efficient gaits, controllability when performing various figures, and the appearance of the crew is also assessed.
On the second day, the participants will have a marathon, where the strength, endurance and fitness of the horses are assessed. The route with a total length of about 30 km passes through rough terrain with difficult terrain and obstacles in the form of hills, bridges and water bodies that must be wade. A certain time limit is set for the passage of each section with the accrual of penalty points (for stopping on the section, dismounting the driver or groom, turning the carriage over).
On the third day, parkour is carried out - a sledding route with a gate placed on a level ground. During the competition, the cleanliness of passing obstacles and agility are assessed. The width of the gate is slightly more than the regulated gauge of the crew, and their stops easily fall when touched. Penalty points are also awarded for violation of the integrity of the goal. The sum of points scored in three types of competitions determines the final places of the championship participants.
