Australia. 150th anniversary of the Royal Society To Prevent Cruelty To Animals (RSPCA)
About stamps and plots
19.10.2021

On October 19, 2021, Australia Post issued a series of postage stamps to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Royal Society To Prevent Cruelty To Animals (RSPCA).

Australia's first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed after a public meeting on July 4, 1871 in Melbourne. The meeting discussed cases of abuse of workhorses in Victoria and the need to create a society to prevent abuse. After the establishment of the Society in Victoria, other Australian colonies followed the example shown. The societies created in different colonies became known as the Royal Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). In 1980, it was decided that the RSPCA should become a nationwide rather than regional organization to provide unanimous voice on policy and advice to the government on animal welfare issues nationwide. The new organization was named "RSPCA Australia".

With this postage stamp, Australia Post pays tribute to the RSPCA's 150 years of animal welfare in Australia. The five postage stamps describe the five basic principles and directions of the RSPCA, corresponding to the first letters of the organization's name: Research, Shelter, Protection, Certification and Advocacy.

Postage stamps also show that RSPCA cares for all animals, in all their qualities and types: pets, farm animals, animals in sports and recreation and, of course, the wild animals of Australia. That is why the postage stamps depict a possum, a cat, a dog, a pig and a horse. The designers of the studio "Andrew Hogg Design" managed not only to create very beautiful stamps, but also to put a deep meaning in them.

Each stamp has a face value of $ 1.10, which is equivalent to paying for a letter at the domestic postage rate. The stamps were also issued on a miniature sheet with decorative margins. Along with the usual series of postage stamps, self-adhesive paper stamps were also issued. And as usual, Australia Post has prepared a large number of additional products on the topic of the release.

By the way, this is not the first issue of postage stamps dedicated to the activities of the RSPCA, in 1971 the Australian Post issued a postage stamp in honor of the 100th anniversary of the RSPCA.
