Switzerland. Stamp Day 2019.Bulle, Gruyeres
About stamps and plots
On November 14, 2019, Switzerland Post issued a souvenir sheet in honor of Stamp Day 2019 in Bulle, Gruyeres.
The Bulle Philatelic Society is very active in promoting philately. In 2015 he organized the Timbr@phil'15 exhibition, and this year, from November 28 to December 1, the international philatelic exhibition Philatelica'19 will be held in Bulle.
Bulle is a small traditional Swiss town in the Gruyères region, in the French-speaking part of the canton of Friborg. The city is considered the regional center of the dairy and livestock industries. Friborg cows are grazed on the shores of the alpine Lake Gruyeres in green meadows, which provide milk for the production of the famous cheeses and desserts.
The colorful souvenir sheet, created by designer Dominique Rossier, introduces us to a unique holiday that is celebrated every autumn in the Gruyere region. The history of this holiday has more than a dozen years, in French it is called La Désalpe, and in the local dialect of La Rindya. Every autumn, shepherds drive their cattle from the alpine pastures for the winter to the valley, and it is this return that is called La Rindya.

Every spring, armayillis herders drive the communal herds of cows to high alpine pastures. There they spend several months working hard and taking care of animals. And every autumn, shepherds must drive the herds from the mountains and return the cows to their owners safe and sound. Over time, this essentially mundane action turned into a real holiday, in which all the villagers took part.
La Rindya is a very colorful action, along the road, smoothly descending from the mountains, there is a herd of cows, which are accompanied by armailis shepherds in festive outfits with staffs in their hands. They walk the same way as they did in the old days: the youngest in front, and the oldest shepherd behind the flock. The men wear traditional bredzon jackets, while their ladies wear smart dzaquillon. But the real stars of this procession are the cows: the head of each of them is decorated with a wreath of branches with flowers woven into them, cow bells hang around their necks on beautifully embroidered leather straps. The best cows receive as decoration something like a plume of green branches, also richly decorated with flowers. The herd is always accompanied by a horse-drawn carriage, which carries all the tools of shepherds and cheese-makers that they used in mountain chalets: milking pots, butter churns, colanders, milk and cream baths and much more. A large inverted kettle is installed at the back of the cart, and milking chairs are suspended from the side of the cart.
Below the shepherds are greeted by all the inhabitants, they hear the cheerful chime of bells from afar and rejoice at the safe return of the armailis and the herd. On this day, a festive meal is prepared, a fair-sale of cheeses and other farm products is held, culinary festivals and festivals of folk music are held. The residents of the Gruyères district honor and support local traditions. The most colorful festivals in La Rindya can be seen in Charmey, Schwarzsee, Albeuve and Semsales.
Designer Dominique Rossier has shown exceptional attention to detail in the design of the souvenir sheet. On the stamp of the sheet, we see a horse-drawn carriage with the property of the shepherds, and on the sheet's field against the background of beautiful alpine landscapes, cows, accompanied by shepherds, walk ceremoniously. Under the bridge, the artist depicted the coat of arms of the Gruyeres district - a white crane on a red background.
Claudia Frankl, head of postage stamps and philately La Poste, noted that this wonderful issue not only presents the upcoming exhibition, but also once again proves that postage stamps are not only collectibles, but also cultural objects, small pieces of Switzerland with its traditions, history and culture.
