On November 30, 2022, the Russian Post issued a postage stamp "Chess" as part of the "Sports" series.
The history of chess has about one and a half thousand years. Probably the oldest known ancestor of chess is the Indian game Chaturanga, adopted by the Persians, who modified it and called it Shatranj. After the Arab conquest of Persia in the 7th century, shatranj spread within the Arab Caliphate, and from the Arabs became known to Europeans. Chess acquired a close to modern look at the end of the 15th century. In the middle of the 19th century, a system of international competitions emerged, first in the form of matches between the strongest chess players from different cities and countries, from the second half of the century also in the form of international tournaments (congresses). World chess championships have been held since 1886. In 1924, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded.
Chess is very popular all over the world, and chess philately is also popular. In honor of various chess championships and famous chess players, postage stamps are regularly issued in different countries, there are specialized thematic catalogs and societies of chess lovers on postage stamps.
The artist Sergei Ulyanovsky managed to create a very expressive postal miniature. The stamp is clearly divided into two parts - black and white, like cells on a chessboard. Shiny lacquered pieces: rook, bishop, chess knights and pawns froze in anticipation of the start of the game. The classical severity of the chess plot is enlivened by portraits of a stern king and an arrogant queen, giving the picture a certain drama. According to a survey conducted by Philately.ru magazine, the Chess was recognized as the best Russian stamp in 2022.
The stamps were issued in small sheets with decorated margins. Each sheet contains 6 stamps and 4 coupons. The circulation of the issue was 102 thousand marks (17 thousand sheets).
In addition to the issue of postage stamps, first-day envelopes were issued and special stamps were made for Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk, Kursk, Novosibirsk, Ryazan, Sevastopol and Tambov, as well as a maximum card.
