On September 2, 2019, the post of the Principality of Liechtenstein issued a new series of postage stamps, “Antico Sculptures,” as part of the issue “Princely Treasures”.
Liechtenstein Post continues to acquaint us with works of art from the princely treasury. This time, the stamps are dedicated to the works of the 16th-century Italian sculptor Pierre Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi (c. 1455–1528), also known as Antico.
Pierre Bonacolsi considered his work as a revival and preservation of the sculptural art of antiquity, which is why he received the nickname "Antico". The sculptor lovingly recreated the compositions of famous classical statues, and also created his own improvisations in the antique style. The small-sized bronze statues created by Antiko are distinguished by their fine, literally jewelry, elaboration of details. A distinctive feature of his sculptures is black patination, as well as the use of gilding and silver inlay, which gave his sculptures additional expressiveness. The bronze works of Antiko show the same grace and refinement inherent in the classical antique statues, which the master admired so much. Antiko's bronze works are rightfully considered one of the most valuable sculptures of the early Renaissance.
The stamps of the series depict three bronze sculptures of an Italian sculptor, stored in the collection of Prince Lichtenstein: “Bust of a young man”, “Hercules with a lion's skin” and “Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius”.
Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was created by Antico in about 1500, the size of the statue is about 35 cm. This is a small copy of the famous equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome, dating back to 176. The work is remarkable for its texture, the thoroughness of casting and processing of bronze, gilding emphasizes the hair and tunic of the rider. The original is at the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna.
Stamps were issued in small sheets of 9 stamps of each face value (3 x 3) with the decoration of the fields. Also, the First day cover and maximum cards with the stamps of the series were prepared by Liechtenstein's post.
