On August 28, 2019, the Japan Post issued a miniature sheet in honor of the 74th National Sports Festival, held this year in Ibaraki Prefecture.
National Sports Festival is the main sporting event of the year in Japan. It has been held annually since 1946. Competitions are held in three stages: in January - competitions in speed skating, figure skating and hockey matches, in February - skiing, and in September and October the Autumn Tournament is held, which includes all other sports disciplines.
Last time, Ibaraki Prefecture hosted the National Sports Festival back in 1974, in honor of the significant event this year a miniature sheet of postage stamps depicting sports disciplines (5 stamps) and attractions of the Ibaraki region (5 stamps) was issued. On the margins of the small sheet there is a sports mascot of Ibaraki Dream “Ibar Laki”, similar to a funny ball with wings.
Equestrian sport is also included in the program of the National Sports Festival, the fifth stamp of the series is dedicated to it. On the stamp the moment of overcoming the obstacle is reproduced. In addition to equestrian sports, the stamps also include golf, sailing, sports climbing and rifle shooting.
Among the attractions of Ibaraki, the plum grove in Kairaku-en Park, Mount Tsukuba, Hitachi Seaside Park with kohii bushes, Fukuroda Falls and the Big Ryujin Suspension Bridge hit the stamps.
The author of the series is designer Yasuko Yamada. During the sports festival, special kiosks selling commemorative postage stamps were opened.
