On 31 October 2019, the Italian Post issued a postage stamp in honor of the 250th anniversary of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Turin.
The postage stamp created by Giustina Milite is based on the historic building of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine on Via Nizza 52, where the faculty was located from 1859 to 1997. In the foreground, we see a large image of a horse and in the upper right there is a commemorative inscription with the logo of the faculty.
The history of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine began two and a half centuries ago in 1769, when, by order of King Carlo Emanuele III, the surgeon Giovanni Brignone organized a veterinary school in Venaria Reale (Turin). Previously, Brignon was trained at a veterinary school founded in 1762 in Lyon, France. Prior to this, care for the health of animals, mainly horses and cattle, was entrusted to blacksmiths who did not have deep knowledge of medicine and used folk remedies to treat animals. The king, however, needed experienced veterinarians to serve the dragoon and cavalry regiments of the Sardinian army. So the appearance of a horse on a postage stamp is completely justified, because it was horses that were the first patients of the Turin veterinarians.
The Veterinary School in Turin was the first in Italy and the fourth in Europe. At the end of the 18th century, agriculture was going through a period of active development, but this process was greatly hampered by frequent epidemics, which literally mowed horses and cattle and did not know how to fight. The creation of a specialized educational institution made it possible to change the situation and make veterinary medicine a serious scientific and practical discipline. The veterinary school studied the anatomy and physiology of animals, in parallel, surgery developed, and new methods of diagnosis and treatment of animals were gradually introduced.
Since its inception, the veterinary school has experienced many relocations and reorganizations; in 1934, it became part of the University of Turin as one of the faculties.
Postage stamps with a face value "B" (1.10 euros) correspond to the rate for sending a simple letter. The stamp was issued on self-adhesive paper in sheets of 45 stamps with a total circulation of 500,000 pieces.
In addition to postage stamps, the Italian post has prepared a special postmark, repeating the plot of the postage stamp, and an information booklet.
In honor of the 250th anniversary of the faculty, the Philatelic Section of the University of Turin (CUT Filatelia) organized a thematic exhibition “Veterinary Medicine in Postage Stamps”. There was a temporary post office at the exhibition, where one could purchase postage cards with a stamp, canceled with a second commemorative stamp specially prepared for this event.
