On 19 May 2018, the Italian Post issued a postage stamp in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Cuirassier Regiment.
The Cuirassier Regiment or Reggimento Corazzieri is the Honor Guard of the President of the Italian Republic. Cuirassier Regiment is part of the Carabinieri Unit, which has been a symbol of stability and protection for Italians for more than two centuries. Cuirassiers are in honorable service of guarding and escorting the President of Italy, also they are guarding his residence in the Quirinal Palace in Rome. Cuirassiers take part in solemn military parades, changing of the guard and other ceremonial events.
Maria Carmela Perrini, an artist, depicted on a postage stamp a cuirassier in full-dress uniform on a horse: with a shiny cuirass and a helmet with a magnificent plume in the courtyard of the Quirinale Palace - the Presidential residence. On the background there is a line of cuirassiers, and in the left upper corner there is an emblem of the Corazzieri regiment.
The Italian Cuirassier Regiment has a rich and glorious history. The date of the modern regiment's foundation is considered to be 1868 when an honor escort was formed by a detachment of 80 carabineersat for the wedding of Prince Umberto and Princess Margherita of Savoy. After the solemn ceremony, the detachment was not disbanded, on the contrary, it was assigned to guard the king and royal residences. If you look even deeper, the history of this guard military unit's creation most likely dates back to 1557, when Duke Emanuel Philibert created the Separate Honorary Royal Guard, selecting fifty best warriors and equipping them with metal cuirass, "сorazza", from which they got their name Corazzieri - cuirassiers.
Since 1876, the dress uniform of cuirassiers practically did not change - they could always be recognized by a shiny metal cuirass, a helmet with horsehair plume, tall cavalry boots and white leggings. Cuirassiers were armed with ceremonial broadswords. Cuirassiers with ceremonial broadswords are armed. In 1946, the last king of Italy, Umberto II, officially dismissed the Cuirassyir detachment, at the same time the republican government formed a detachment of mounted police, eliminating the colorful uniform. However, during the inauguration of President Luigi Einaudi in 1948, the parade uniform of the model of 1876 was returned to the cuirassiers, and in 1992 the old name “Corazzieri” was returned.
You can’t see the cuirassier regiment in all its glory often - Corazzieri in ceremonial uniform participate in changing the guard at the Quirinale only twice a year - January 7 (Flag Day) and June 2 (Republic Day).
