On April 2, 2020, the Hungarian Post issued a postage stamp in honor of the 400th anniversary of the birth of the Hungarian military leader and poet Miklós Zrínyi.
Miklós Zrínyi (1620 - 1664) - Croatian and Hungarian politician, military leader, public figure and poet. Belonged to the old Croatian Zrinski family. In 1647-1664 he was the governor of Croatia, a hero of the Austro-Turkish war of 1663-1664.
Miklós Zrínyi considered the goal of his life to be the expulsion of the Turks from Hungary and the liberation of his country. He spent his entire life fighting the conquerors, became an outstanding military leader and one of the main heroes of the Austro-Turkish War. Despite major military successes, the Austrian Empire signed a peace treaty with the Sultan, according to which many of the liberated lands were returned to the Ottoman Empire. Disillusioned with the policies of the Habsburgs, Miklos Zrigny retired from the court and began to develop plans for the creation of an independent Hungarian kingdom. Zrínyi believed that Hungary was capable of freeing itself from the Turkish yoke, and opposed the subjugation of the country to the Habsburgs. Now it is difficult to say how real and successful his plans would have been and how history could have gone, because Miklós Zrínyi tragically died hunting in 1664 at the age of 44.
Miklós Zrínyi considered himself more a military leader and only a little poet. Today, however, Miklós Zrínyi is considered an outstanding figure in 17th century Hungarian literature. The central theme of his work was the fight against the Turkish invasion, which he described based on personal impressions. The epic poem "The Peril of Sziget" (1645-1646, published in 1651), is dedicated to the heroic struggle and death of his ancestor - Miklos Zrinyi Sr. during the defense of the fortress Sigetvar, besieged by the troops of Suleiman II. In the political treatise "Reflections on the Life of King Matthias" (1655), Zrinyi promotes the idea of Hungary's independence. An example of the old Hungarian journalism is his patriotic pamphlet "An Antidote to the Turkish Poison" (1660-1661). In addition, Miklós Zrínyi is the author of a collection of lyric poems.
For the design of the postage stamp, artist Szilvia Lázár used an old lithograph by Johann Hofmann with an equestrian portrait of Miklós Zrínyi. On it, a commander with a saber in his hand with a resolute look sits on a war horse. On the left, over the artist's portrait, she placed an excerpt from "An Antidote to the Turkish Poison" - one of the most famous works of the poet.
