On July 28, 2020, the post of Azerbaijan issued a series of postage stamps on the theme "Ancient post routes" within the framework of the "Europe" program.
The origin of postal communication on the territory of modern Azerbaijan dates back to ancient times, when runners and horse messengers were used to exchange letters, messages were also transmitted with trade caravans.
The appearance of regular mail is associated with the name and deeds of the Shahenshah of Iran Ismail I, who in 1501 founded the Safavid state, which included the lands of modern Azerbaijan.
Realizing the need and importance of fast transmission of messages, Shah Ismail ordered to organize a network of postal routes for equestrian messengers between the major cities of his empire. This laid the foundation for a regular postal service at the state level.
The designer of this series of stamps is the chief artist of Azermarka Vugar Eyyubov. On two stamps of the series and a souvenir sheet, he depicted postal messengers, as well as medieval postal routes passing through the territory of modern Azerbaijan. The 0.5 manat stamp depicts a map with the Baku - Shemakhi - Tabriz route, and the 0.6 manat stamp depicts the postal route Derbent - Shemakhi - Nakhichevan - Ganja - Yerevan.
The stamps were issued in miniature sheets of 12 stamps each, a booklet and a first day cover were also prepared. On the first day of postage stamps, they were canceled with a special postmark.
