On January 19, 2022, the Austrian Post released the next souvenir sheet in the "History of Postal Transport" series.
The modern series "History of postal transport" was launched by the Austrian Post in 2013, so this year we will see the tenth anniversary issue. It's a little strange that the souvenir sheet appeared in January, since all previous issues were released in August.
The designer of this wonderful series, Regina Simon, continues to use vintage postcards to decorate the souvenir sheet. The prototype for this block was a 19th-century postcard issued by the famous printing house Stengel & Co from Dresden. In the first decade of the 20th century, this German company, founded in 1885, became the largest postcard manufacturer in the world. The postcard reproduces the painting "Arrival of the Post Stagecoach" by the artist Hugo Ungewitter.
Hugo Ungewitter (1869 - 1947) famous German artist, professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He is known for his battle canvases and paintings on military-historical themes. However, Ungewitter also has many genre paintings with hunting scenes and travel sketches that he made during his many travels. The artist in different years visited Abyssinia, South America, visited Russia. Hugo Ungewitter is known for his realistic depictions of nature and animals. He remained faithful to realism until the end of his life, not succumbing to the trends that took place in painting in the first half of the 20th century.
When the artist was not on the road, he constantly lived in Berlin. Most likely, it was there that he witnessed the scene with the arrival of the post stagecoach on the snowy street of the city.
Traveling in a mail stagecoach, especially in winter, was hardly a great pleasure for passengers. Long hauls in cramped, cold coaches on a dirt road were a real test. Therefore, stagecoaches made sure to make stops along the way so that passengers could get out and stretch their legs, and the horses could rest and eat. Although, if you do not think about these everyday trifles, then the bright yellow stagecoach drawn by four horses in the picture looks very elegant and attractive.
