On February 27, 2019, Ukraine Post released the "Cimmerians" souvenir sheet from the "Cultural Epochs of Ukraine" series.
The Cimmerians, or Cimmerians, were an ancient nomadic people who lived in the Northern and Eastern Black Sea region (Crimea, the Azov region, Taman, the western Ciscaucasia, and the Caucasus) in the 9th-7th centuries BC. Cimmerians is also a conventional name for the so-called "pre-Scythian" peoples of the Northern Black Sea region during the Iron Age.
The history of the Cimmerians can be traced through archaeological materials and written sources. The earliest information about this people is preserved in Western Asian cuneiform writings and in the works of Greek historians.
The Cimmerians were a numerous and powerful people, uniting a number of tribes. The Cimmerians likely initially led a sedentary lifestyle, but a number of factors contributed to their transition to nomadic pastoralism, with horse breeding playing a significant role. The presence of large cavalry units enabled the Cimmerians to conduct successful military campaigns. Uniting into highly mobile and maneuverable, yet large and powerful, units, they posed a formidable threat to any enemy. A Cimmerian warrior was, first and foremost, an excellent horseman, masterful in the use of long-range weapons—the bow and arrow. In close combat, the Cimmerian warrior used an iron-tipped spear, stone hammers, and high-quality iron swords and daggers.
The Cimmerians were the first steppe dwellers to threaten the ancient Greek civilization with their raids. The devastating raids of the fearsome northern Cimmerian nomads and their unusual appearance so astonished their southern neighbors that the image of Cimmerian warriors was captured in fine art (on vases), sculpture, and described in ancient texts. The Cimmerians wore tall hooded hats, tight trousers comfortable for horseback riding, belted shirts, and short Scythian boots.
The artists Sergey and Alexander Kharugi used all this information when creating the souvenir sheet. The stamp on the souvenir sheet depicts attacking Cimmerian horsemen, as well as an archer with a powerful bow. When decorating the margins, the artists used an image of Cimmerians from a painting on an Etruscan vase from the 6th century BC and a gold ornament from a Cimmerian burial.
