On May 22, 2019, the Tunis post released a series of postage stamps dedicated to Tunisian endangered species.
The animal world of Tunisia is quite rich and diverse, but at the same time some local animals are endangered. To remind people about this, the Tunisian Post released a series of 3 stamps and a block with three animals that are on the verge of extinction - this is Pony Mogods, Addax or Mendez antelope and Oryx is a type of saber-legged antelope.
Also called the Tunisian, the Mogod Pony comes from the northernmost area of Tunisia and is thought to be a strain of the mighty Barb horse, refined and bred to suit the area over centuries.
This breed was actively bred in Tunis at the beginning of the 20th century; small hardy horses were used as a pack animal and as horse-drawn transport in agriculture. The second application of the pony Mogod was horse riding and horseback polo; these ponies were even exported to Italy, Malta, France and England. Sadly as machines began to replace animals in the 20th century their numbers began to dwindle. After World War II, the low lying pony was sharply reduced and now to prevent the extinction of the breed, the authorities of Tunisia have entrusted the management of this breed to the National Horse Breeding Fund. In 2002, the livestock of Tunisian ponies was estimated at only 1000 heads.
Now interest in the Tunisian pony is growing again, his calm nature and docile disposition makes him a good horse for horseback riding and equestrian tourism.
