On March 1, 2019 Polish postal service issued the postal stamp in memory of “National day of memory of cursed soldiers”.
The national day of memory of “cursed soldiers” is a national holiday in Poland. It commemorates the so-called “cursed soldiers” – the members of Polish anticommunist and anti-Soviet underground movement that operated in Poland in the second part of 1940s and in 1950s. This holiday was officially established in 2011 and is celebrated on March, 1.
On the foreground of the stamp a viewer can see Marian Bernaciak – a Polish officer, the participant of anti-nazi Resistance and of anticommunist partisan organization. He was also an activist of the Union of Armed Resistance and “Freedom and Independence” organization. He commanded the partisan formation of Armia Kraiowa and is now considered a national hero.
The stamp picture is based on the real photograph of 1944 in which Marian Bernaciak – the commander of “15th Wolves Infantry Regiment” at that time – was entering the newly liberated from German troops town named Ryki (June 26, 1944).
