On October 5, 2018, a souvenir sheet dedicated to the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Latvia was issued by the Kyrgyz Post in cooperation with the Latvian Post.
The Kyrgyz and Latvian peoples both have ancient cultural traditions and an important part of these are folk epics. It is to these national epics of the Kyrgyz and Latvian peoples that the joint issue is dedicated.
Two postage stamps of the souvenir sheet represent outstanding epic heroes: the Kyrgyz Manas and the Latvian Lachplesis, embodied in famous sculptural compositions.
On a stamp with a value of 50 som, designer Daria Mayer depicted the equestrian monument to Manas in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), on the second stamp with a value of 150 som, a bas-relief of Lachplesis on the Freedom Monument in Riga. The flags of Kyrgyzstan and Latvia are depicted on the tab between the stamps, the memorial text in Kyrgyz and Latvian is displayed on the block’s field.
The image of the monument to Manas was not chosen by chance for the postal souvenir sheet. The Kyrgyz hero Manas is the most famous national hero and character that will unite the nation. The monument to Manas the Magnanimous was installed in Bishkek on Ala-Too Square on August 31, 2011. The sculptor Bazarbay Sydykov, the bogatyr quietly sits on his horse, he holds a sword in his left hand and his right arm is raised for greeting.
The souvenir sheet was released in 5,000 copies. On the first day of issue a special cancellation was made on the official envelopes of the first day.
This Joint issue of postage stamps of Kyrgyzstan and Latvia has become a good gift to all collectors of joint issues, and thanks to the selected monuments, it has come to the attention of horse lovers on stamps.
