On February 20, 2020, the Croatian Post issued a series of postage stamps entitled "Children's World" dedicated to dwarf animals.
Taking care of animals brings up the best qualities in us: kindness, compassion, responsibility. A pet is able to keep a company with any person and become a good friend for a child. Nowadays, dwarf pets are very popular. Reduced copies of common animals look incredibly cute and are much easier to keep at home. If we talk about domestic animals, then the appearance of dwarf breeds is the result of targeted selection.
The postage stamp authors Lidija Novosel and Adam Peter Maguire chose four dwarf animals to design the series: the African dwarf hedgehog, pony, Vietnamese pig and Croatian dwarf chicken.
Dwarf hedgehogs are four times smaller than their forest brothers and weigh about 350 g. Their needles are soft to the touch and you can even stroke such a hedgehog. Hedgehogs quickly get used to the owners, recognize their voice and come to the call, and they are also happy to substitute a soft abdomen to scratch it. Another dwarf creature that has become very popular all over the world is the mini-pig. Pygmy pigs are adorable and very intelligent, easy to train and can be walked with on a leash. Dwarf chickens are a miniature copy of their usual relatives, only they weigh no more than one kilogram.
Most dwarf breeds appeared only in the 20th century. And only the history of miniature horses has more than one hundred years. Separate attempts to breed small horses have been made in European stud farms as entertainment since the end of the 17th century. In the 19th century, the need arose for small, hardy horses to work in coal mines - this was the impetus for the next stage of breeding work. Nowadays, ponies are relieved of hard work, they have become the favorites of children and have become their faithful helpers in acquiring riding skills. Regular ponies participate in children's races, driving and vaulting competitions. Dwarf ponies are kept exclusively for decorative purposes. The smallest in the world are falabella horses. Their height varies from 40 to 75 cm, and their weight ranges from 20-60 kg.
The stamps were issued in the form of a single sheet of 8 stamps, also the Croatian Post issued a first day cover (FDC) and prepared a special postmark.
