On January 17, 2020, Colombia Post issued a series of postage stamps in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Artillery Battalion No.3 Battle of Palacé.
The issue of postage stamps is a tribute to the distinguished military unit of the Colombian army, whose soldiers participated in numerous military operations aimed at protecting the independence and territorial integrity of the country, protecting the civilian population and maintaining law and order.
In 1920, on the basis of the Third Division of the National Army, the Artillery Battalion No.3 was created, in 1952, during the next army reorganization, it was reorganized and the battalion was given its modern name: the Artillery Battalion No.3 Battle of Palacé permanent deployment in the city of Buga, Valle del Cauca. In 2020, this military unit turned 100 years old. The battalion got its name "Batalla de Palacé" in honor of the famous battle of the Lower Palace (Batalla del Bajo Palacé) that took place in 1811.
At that time, the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Granada was located on the territory of modern Colombia, Venezuela, Panama and Ecuador. The weakening of Spain as a result of the invasion of Napoleon's troops into the country also influenced the situation in the Viceroyalty. In 1810, a series of armed uprisings against the Spanish government swept across the territory of New Granada. Cartagena, Socorro, Pamplona, Santa Fe and other cities proclaimed their own governments and declared their independence from the Spanish crown, which they defended with arms in hand. During this period, there were numerous military clashes between the units that remained loyal to Spain and the national volunteer units.
One of the landmark battles between the patriots of New Granada and the troops supporting Spain was the Battle of the Lower Palace in 1811. During a military clash that took place on March 28, 1811 on the Palace River, the battalion "Volunteers of the National Guard" under the command of Colonel Antonio Baraya defeated a Spanish detachment under the command of Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal Army Miguel Tacón y Rosique, Marqués de la Unión de Cuba. This battle was one of the first victories in the war of independence, it played an important role in the history of the formation of Colombia as an independent state. Therefore, it is not surprising that the honored artillery battalion of the modern Colombian army bears the name of the Battle of the Palace, as a tribute to the memory of military valor and the fighting spirit of the soldiers of the last century.
The postage stamps reproduce the painting "The Battle of the Lower Palace" by Jorge Humberto Saavedra Orejuela, painted by the artist in 1998. The painting is in the position of the Batalla de Palacé artillery battalion. The picture consists of three parts, forming a kind of triptych, in the same way stamps were issued in a se-tenant of three postage miniatures. The stamps are issued in the form of a miniature sheet of two couplings of se-tenant of three stamps with decorative fields. At the top of the miniature sheet are the coat of arms of the National Army of Colombia and the emblem of the Artillery Battalion No.3 Battle of Palacé.
