On December 26, 2018 the postal service of Argentina issued two postal stamps as a part of “Argentinian Philately” series.
The first stamp of the series is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Argentinian Central Post Office. The monumental building of the Post and Telegraph Palace (Palacio de Correos y Telégrafos) was built in 1928. On the stamp one can see the very building depicted in black and white, and also elements of the Palace’s inner setting.
The second stamp is dedicated to the 270th anniversary of establishment of the regular mail service in Rio de la Plata.
The regular mail service was established in Rio de la Plata by curtesy of Domingo de Basavilbaso. He was a Spanish nobleman, native of Llodio, who settled in Buenos Aires in 1727. Initially he was in trade, but later pursued a career in politics: he held important government posts in the local government, including being an alcalde of Buenos Aires. His duties entailed a lot of traveling around Rio de la Plata, which made him realize the necessity of establishing the regular mail service, since it would expedite the process of governing and would also positively affect the regional economy. His project was deemed useful by authorities, and in 1748 Domingo de Basavilbaso received a licence to organize the regular postal route between Buenos Aires and Potosi. That route quickly grew into a whole network that reached even Lima, the vicegerency’s capital of that time. The new postal service connected Buenos Aires with Mendosa, Santiago de Chile, Cordova, Santiago del Estero, as well as with northern provinces and Peru.
June 17, 1748 – the day the official decree was signed – is considered the birthday of the regular postal service in Rio de la Plata, and Domingo de Basavilbaso is thought to be a founding father of the postal service in Argentina.
The stamp with a face value of 30 + 15 Argentinian peso shows the history of development of postal service and also various ways of mail delivery. On the foreground of the stamp we can see a mounted postman from the middle of the 19th century, a postman from the 20th century and also a modern postal lorry.
Beside postal stamps, special first-day envelopes were issued that were cancelled with the special commemorative seal on the very day the series was released.
