On November 9, 2021, the Algerian Post issued a series of postage stamps dedicated to traditional saddle making.
Saddle making is one of the traditional Algerian crafts. The art of making horse saddles has been passed down from generation to generation. Nowadays, traditional saddles, richly decorated with embroidery and silver, can be seen during fantasy equestrian festivals. During the festival, riders demonstrate their riding and shooting skills, as well as the speed and endurance of their horses and the beauty and richness of their harness.
Algerian saddles are distinguished by high back and front bows, short wings, and wide girths. The saddle, saddlecloth, girths and even stirrups are richly decorated with embroidery, colored inserts and brass or silver embossing.
Traditional handicraft leather and saddlery production certainly cannot compete with modern industry, but the Algerians carefully preserve it as a traditional craft, as a national cultural heritage. The production of saddles and horse harness is widespread in many regions of Algeria, with the centers of saddle production in the districts of Tiaret, Tlemcen and Temouchent.
The series is produced in se-tenants of 2 stamps. On the first stamp, the artist Zakaria Morsli depicted a finished ornate saddle, and on the second, the tools that the craftsman uses while working to create the saddle.
The post also issued a first day cover, on the first day of issue stamps were canceled with a special postmark.
