July 9, 2018 La Poste issued a postage stamp "Traditional houses" of the release of the Mediterranean Postal Union (Euromed). The traditional landscape of the Camargue: a farmhouse with a reed roof, flamingos and gray camargue horses.

About Euromed - Mediterranean Houses

The Postal Union for the Mediterranean (PUMed), a restricted union of the UPU, was created on 11 March 2011 and currently includes postal operators representing the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

La Poste has chosen the gardian house in the Camargue to illustrate the common theme of 2018 "Mediterranean Houses".

Appeared in the sixteenth century. these huts were built using local plant materials. In the 19th century, they sheltered permanently or seasonally, shepherds, fishermen, farmers, salt workers .. working in the Camargue.

The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians, the Camargue "cowboys" who herd the black Camargue bulls used in bullfighting in southern France.  Its origins remain relatively unknown, although it is generally considered one of the oldest breeds of horses in the world. Camargue horses are always gray. This means that they have black skin underlying a white hair coat as adult horses.
